Automated Sliding Gates Questions

Every question we get asked about automated sliding gates, answered straight.

Questions

How It Works

  • What is included in a full sliding gate installation quote?

A complete quote should cover the motor, rack, ground track or cantilever carriages, safety photocells, safety edges, remote fob or keypad, and any groundwork such as post foundations and cable runs. 18th Edition wiring should be included, not added later.

  • Can an existing sliding gate be motorised?

Sometimes, but only after a site check. The installer assesses the gate’s weight, balance, and structural condition, then confirms whether a compatible automation kit can be fitted or whether any remedial work is needed first.

  • Do automated sliding gates need planning permission in Essex?

Many installations fall within permitted development, but permission can be required if the gate exceeds height limits or sits close to a highway. A planning check is part of the survey for any Chigwell installation near a road boundary.

  • What happens if I delay automating a gate that is already sticking or dragging?

A gate that drags or comes off its track puts strain on hinges, posts, and the ground surface. Left unaddressed, the gate structure can deteriorate to the point where a simple automation kit is no longer sufficient and more extensive remedial work is needed.

  • What is the difference between a ground track and a cantilever system?

A ground track runs along the driveway surface and suits firm, level ground. A cantilever system suspends the gate from overhead carriages with no track in the travel path, making it the right choice for gravel, uneven ground, or where drainage must not be blocked.

  • Which access control options can be added to a sliding gate?

Remote fob, keypad entry, intercom, and app-based access are all available. The right combination depends on how many people need regular access and whether visitors need to be screened before the gate opens.

Tell Us About Your Entrance

We arrange a local installer to survey your entrance, specify safety edges and photocells to DHF and Gate Safe standards, and quote groundwork and wiring as part of the same job.
