Preventative Maintenance & Servicing Questions

Every question we get asked about preventative maintenance & servicing, answered straight.

Questions

How It Works

  • What is included in a preventative maintenance visit?

The visit covers the motor, safety edges, photocells, hinges, rollers, wiring, control panel, and manual release. A closing force test is run to confirm the gate stops within the limits set by the Supply of Machinery Safety Regulations before the visit is signed off.

  • Is safety sensor testing a legal requirement?

Yes. The Supply of Machinery Safety Regulations require powered gates to stop safely on contact. Safety edges and photocells must be tested to confirm they respond correctly. BS 7671 also applies to the associated wiring and controls.

  • What happens if I wait until the gate actually breaks down?

An unplanned failure often means an emergency call-out, which costs more than a scheduled service. If the gate fails in a closed position, vehicles can be trapped. A motor that has been running in overload for months may need full replacement rather than a simple repair.

  • Can I lubricate the gate myself instead of booking a service?

Light lubrication can ease minor sticking, but it will not replace a proper inspection. Safety sensors, the motor, and the control panel all need checking, a small fault in any of those will not be caught by lubrication alone.

  • Why does my gate keep needing the same repair?

Repeated faults usually point to wear, misalignment, or a component that is close to failing. A service looks at the full mechanism rather than only the visible symptom, so the underlying cause is identified rather than patched over again.

  • Will a service fix a gate that has already stopped working?

A service visit includes a full inspection, which will identify what has failed. If a part has already broken, repair work may be needed alongside the service. The inspection confirms the full picture before any parts are ordered.

Tell Us About Your Entrance

We arrange a local installer to survey your entrance, specify safety edges and photocells to DHF and Gate Safe standards, and quote groundwork and wiring as part of the same job.
